Releasing the latest single “FlamePrincess!” today for his upcoming sophomore album ALLGASNOBREAKZ out 18th April, Trent the HOOLiGAN is the latest artist to come out of the music hotpot of the American South and is ready to become an essential part of your playlist for your daily drive.
A pastor’s turned rapper from North Carolina, Georgia and Florida - Trent has a background as unique as one you will ever find and his music shows that. Blending paternal influences from Christian Rock with the likes of OutKast and Kendrick Lamar, Trent’s music comes with layers upon layers for listeners to discover.
However, throughout the layers of influences, experimental beats and creative music videos, there is a prominent string of heartfelt emotion that runs throughout the music. Not one to wallow in sadness but also not one to rap exclusively in vanity; in both his music and in person Trent preaches about pain and growth. Although he has gone through tough times himself, he is relentlessly writing new music everyday and it shows. Not only in the samples we have heard from this upcoming album but also throughout his entire discography, whereas other artists aim to perfect the formula for cookie cutter virality, it is clear to see that Trent truly experiments with his music and tries to grow as an artist every release.
Perhaps always destined to be an outcast from his unique set of influences, Trent still manages to make music for a wide variety of people: from the kid eating his lunch in the school toilets looking for some music to lean on, to the teenager controlling the aux on a road trip to the adult looking to soundtrack their morning gym sessions - there’s truly something there for everyone.
With a butterly smooth flow across some silky beats, Trent’s music is certainly easy on the ear as a finished product, but where does it all come from? Originally introduced to rap by his brother playing B.o.B back in the day, Trent has become a student of the game, listening to a wide range of music from the more obvious, good kid, m.A.A.d city by Kendrick & J.Cole’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive to the less obvious by dabbling in a bit of Olivia Rodrigo and Harry Styles. But that does not stop him from speaking his truth, jokingly saying that what you can expect from ALLGASNOBREAKZ is “a lot of trauma dumping”.
Although that is true, and runs in line with the theme of battling his vices present in both the album cover and music of his debut album “Medusa”; it is clear that what Trent says is truly authentic. There are no ghostwriters, filters or fakeness so if there is one thing guaranteed from ALLGASNOBREAKZ, it is 100% Trent and can be best summed up by the man himself;
Q: If you had to describe your music in three words, what three words would you choose?
Trent: “Southern, heartfelt and… hard-as-F**K”
Overall, Trent the HOOLiGAN is a refreshing reminder for what music is all about in this time of social media where it feels like every online celebrity is trying to make their way to the top of the music industry. Although he has yet to hit UK and Europe shores with his tours, he is already set to conquer the US with shows from coast to coast with shows from NYC to LA later this year with AGNBZ. His sound is certainly unique and although he may not be a complete household name just yet, you better watch this space, as you may just see this next great representative of the American South come to a venue near you very shortly…
