SKILLABABY: Detroit's finest roars again

This month on MoveOnUp, with special thanks to 1824 & Geffen Records, we got the exclusive opportunity to talk with the Icky Vicky Vibes rapper ahead of the release of his most recent project titled "We Eat The Most (Reloaded)".

The first thing people should know about the Detroit rapper is he is an absolute workhorse when it comes to his craft. Breaking new ground on each project like Henry Ford did in the city 120 years ago with the first ever car. SkillaBaby churns out new high quality music consistently, having released approximately two projects a year for the past three years.

Matching the sheer determination and grit of the up and coming Detroit lions, SkillaBaby is inevitably shaped by the Motor City as well. A city which may not be as grandiose in the rap game as NYC or LA, but nevertheless has been called home by a number of chart hitting rappers such as Eminem, Big Sean and Lizzo. However, even though those rappers are internationally known, the distinctive sound of Detroit hiphop continues to evade true international recognition.

SkillaBaby is here to change that.

Recently releasing the mixtape "Controversy" alongside Tee Grizzley, Skilla is here to make a positive change to get Detroit roaring once again. Following in his idol Lil Wayne's footsteps of constant collaboration and features to expand his reach, Skilla frequently features on other songs & has a number of features on We Eat the Most that certainly elevate the project (with my personal favourite being the Luh Tyler feature on "Millionaire")

There's no secret that Detroit has had its struggles, but the importance of having one artist wave your city's flag cannot be understated, yet alone having two collaborating with one another to make the city's music scene louder & prouder than ever before/

Aside from his own songs like Icky Vicky Vibes, Tay B Style, Gorgeous and countless others that have racked up numbers. Skilla has already been in the company of rap royalty, previously supporting Future at Little Caesars Arena, home of the Detroit Pistons & Detroit Red Wings.

Being recognised by those at the top of his profession, with the whole arena screaming the lyrics to his music, was one of the biggest "oh sh*t" moments in his young but already distinguished career. However, Skilla keeps his feet on the ground, regularly being seen visiting and performing at schools in his area to inspire the youth. Although the arenas are nice, Skilla said that the youth is what really makes it all worth it...

"I do it because a lot of those kids come from broken homes, broken families and if I come to schools then I can maybe make one of those kids start going to school everyday anticipating that I come by"

Overall, with the amount of output Skilla has, alongside Tee Grizzley, the Detroit sound is going to be put on the front stage of the rap game sooner than you think. If you want to listen to the blooming of a new rap star then you can give "We Eat The Most" a stream on your music platform of choice, with the link to SkillaBaby's socials down below:
