Scaring the Hoes : an explosive start to the rap game in 2023

All rights reserved: JPEGMAFIA

Put your phone down, strap yourselves in and put one hand on the Bible…this record takes you from 0 to 100 in precisely 22 seconds with the first explosion of 808’s on the opening track Lean Beef Patty titled after TikTok’s hottest muscle mommy, which pretty much summarises the absurd velocity of this record; a composition of smooth rhymes violently blended with statements so bold they may need to go to Turkey for a transplant…

After two minutes of absorbing the many characters and tones of JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown on the album titled song, the listener is presented the promise of the remainder of the album…music that will upset the party due to it’s amped up extremities. Drawing clear inspiration from similar alternative rap artists such as Death Grips, the dynamic duo manage to produce an un-skippable confusion of tracks that are guaranteed to excite the listener.

From sampling classic naughties’ R&B hits from Diddy and Kanye West to enchant the tracks, Peggy and Danny somehow manage to make this even better with the sounds of Hokkaido commercials and CustomGraphix YouTube snippets. Shortly afterwards we’re transported to the righteous trumpets of, in my opinion, the standout record of the album Burfict! as we bop our heads back and forth to the sheer insanity of the pairs flow and delivery, with smart quips such as ‘he was saying he a Crypto but I still sent his ass up to the moon’. We’re then treated to the pair flip verse for verse over samples of Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga (yes you heard me) as the undertone of the album softens but the bars get more malicious.

As you can get the gist of, the production value of this album is ludicrous and the rappers are not held behind by these beats, if anything thrown forward to get into a concise, unique and overall outstanding flow and rhythm changing the landscape of the rap game in this new era. More than a few relistens are in order to fully grasp the scale of the project but it’s safe to say that this album that nobody was expecting is steady making waves across the rap community so grab your surfboards dear listener because you’re going to want to enjoy this ride for the rest of 2023 and beyond.
