A couple of weeks back we had the pleasure to talk with one of our favourite up-and-coming bands coming out of Brighton, SAMETIME. The two brothers from down under are busking & hustling their way into the UK music industry and here's their story and a chance to get to know them before they blow up.

Playing music since they were tiny, Tim and Sam Aitken grew up in a sonic world that embedded melodies of the Eagles, Oasis and Robbie Williams straight into their veins. Practicing harmonizing in the car to and from school & busking in the streets of Caloundra , the boys have well and truly put their 10,000 hours into perfecting their craft as live performers just like their idols. Going as far as to perform on the world famous Today Show and busk outside Ed Sheeran's Suncorp Stadium soldout gig in their younger days.
Growing up along the picturesque Gold Coast of Australia, their music embodies the seemingless external sunshine of their hometown. Whilst their "balls to the wall" mentality is reflected in their sheer fearlessness in moving from aus to Brighton to make their dreams of making it in music come true.
So far they've proven pretty popular in their quest to make it in music here across the world. Selling out Patterns, Brighton in October and The Green Door Store just before that, the boys have more than proven that they can indeed put on a show. Although they humbly credit the people of Brighton with their outstanding reception at Patterns; it's down to the poise, guts and talent of the pair self booking, producing and performing at the show that led to its raucous sellout.
But why did they choose Brighton of all places? Actually the first question I asked them, the answer simply stems from "we heard it was cool". Coming on a whim, both Tim & Sam credit the city with reigniting their passion for music...
"if we moved anywhere else [other than Brighton], we would've gone back home"
Although they're in the process of working on their debut album, the brothers already have already released some fantastic tunes to feast your ears on. Particular favourites are "some things never change" and "should've known better" which perfectly embody the bittersweet euphoria that encapsulates SAMETIME's current sound.
Describing their music as "euphoric, imperfect and human", above all else authenticity rules roost in their production process. Multilayered in lyrics and instrumentals, although SAMETIME have a DIY indiepop sound, their tracks display a level of sophistication and production skill you rarely see for artists producing outside the major label system.
Produce, produce and produce is what the boys do, helping craft tracks for various other artists around the Brighton area as a dynamic duo alongside their own work. Of which, we can share that they are about to go on a 12 day songwriting retreat to perfect even more tracks after recently narrowing 40 tracks down to 7 for their upcoming EP.
Sonically taking inspiration from bands like the 1975, Bleachers and others from that soundscape. With Sam actually having two tattoos of the former (including handwriting by the eclectic Matty Healy himself). You can hear the influence of their idols in what they do, but it crucially doesn't serve to replicate them. In their younger days they aimed for pop perfection, but that sentiment has well and truly worn off now. So, as much as we can expect truly we'll polished tracks coming up, we'll also see tracks that have still maintain their humanity.

SAMETIME's humility is truly striking when you talk to them; whilst discussing the biggest lessons they've learnt over the course of their multiple years in music across the world, the pair said their biggest lesson was "to always backup everything". Sharing a candid moment about their Ableton backing tracks crashing in the rehearsals for their recent hometown show when they visited for the holidays; the boys joked about their friend having to dropbox the tracks from all their house in Brighton to save the show.
But don't be fooled, these brothers are not amateurs. From their music, their visuals and everything in between; the SAMETIME brand is crafted, with each piece of content they put out being intentional. Like the Mercians from my first interview on MoveOnUp (who have blown up to touring with Jess Glynne and selling out UK tours since); it is clear that the Tim & Sam are switched on to what they can offer in the current music landscape.
Matching their unique life path, the brothers say "no one is doing what we do like us at the moment" and it is something that rings true in every track they release. Expect more, expect bigger and expect arena in the future for this dynamic duo.
